Clumping vs. Non-Clumping Cat Litter

Every cat and their family has a preference for what kind of litter they should use in their litter box. Some prefer clumping litter while some prefer non-clumping litter. In this article, we will talk about the facts behind each kind of litter to help you chose which kind it the best choice for you and your kitty!

Clumping Litter Facts!

  • Lets face it, when litter clumps, it makes it easier for clean up. When liquid comes in contact with clumping litter, it forms a huge ball of litter that is easily scoopable from the box. You should scoop this kind of litter, every day and no less than every other day depending on how many cats you have and how often your cats visit the litter box!
  • Since all waste is easily removable, you only have to deep clean the litter box once or twice a month.
  • Clumping litter is usually better for the keeping the yucky smells away because all waste is removed each clean up!
  • If the non-clumping litter you are looking at contains clay, it might be worth knowing that clay contains silica dust which is harmful for both you and your cat.

Non-Clumping liter facts!

  • Non clumping litter usually has a longer usage time because it does not clump together. Your cat can urinate on the same spot of litter multiple times without having to throw it away immediately.
  • Once the litter has absorbed as much liquid as it can, the urine will begin to pool in the bottom of the box meaning you will have to empty the whole litter pan to get it clean.
  • Because the litter can absorb more urine, it usually can control odor slightly better than non-clumping.
  • Instead of cleaning the litter box everyday and deep cleaning every month or so, you will deep clean the litter box around once a week which may work better for you schedule or life style.
